The Geodetic Institute was founded in 1870, in the same year as the University of Technology Aachen , by the distinguished and internationally well-known Professor Robert Helmert. Today its head is Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wilhelm Benning. There are 19 members of staff of which 8 are scientists.
